DNF introduces entry-level DAS
Computer Technology Review
10/19/2006
Oct 19 -- Dynamic Network Factory Inc. (DNF), today introduced three new direct attached storage (DAS) systems as part of its enterprise line of affordable, scalable storage solutions for small to mid-sized enterprises (SMEs). Available at a price starting at less than US$3,000, the new Enterprise DAS systems support 750 GB (gigabyte) disks and up to 12 drives and 9 TB (terabyte) of storage in a single chassis, DNF of Hayward California said last week. DNF is a privately held vendor of high-performance network attached storage (NAS), storage area networks (SANs), RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) and iSCSI (Internet SCSI) systems. Earlier this year, DNF completed its acquisition of StoneFly Networks, an iSCSI storage vendor and developer of complete, turnkey IP SAN solutions in San Diego, California. DNF’s Enterprise DAS line is designed to support the growing storage requirement of SMEs in a variety of applications including web applications, disk-to-disk backup and file server storage. The company’s new Enterprise DAS systems leverage years of experience in the storage business to deliver all the scalability and reliability that SMEs need, the company said. The Enterprise 4322 is the company’s new entry-level DAS system, featuring support for 1 to 3 TB of storage in a single 1U chassis, as well as support for RAID levels 0, 1, 0+1, 3, 5, 10, 30, 50 and JBOD (Just a bunch of disks), DNF said. The system is priced at less than $3,000. Enterprise 4322 3Gb/s (gigabits per second) SATA-to-Ultra320 SCSI RAID series is ideal for building a shared storage pool for data backup, the company said on its web site. The subsystem has an Ultra320 SCSI host channel and four 3 Gb/s SATA disk drives in a 1U 19" rack mount enclosure. Combining reliable storage capacity with 3Gb/s SATA benefits such as high performance and dedicated bandwidth in a safe environment, the Enterprise 4322 RAID assures the highest level of data availability, the company said. Supporting the complete list of RAID configuration levels, in the form of logical drives, logical volumes and logical partitions, the Enterprise 4322 RAID allows multiple RAID configurations to co-exist within one enclosure, each with a distinct write policy, stripe size, and optimization modes, it added. Also now available is the Enterprise 8322, which supports 2 to 6 TB in a single 2U chassis and can be used with RAID Levels 0, 1, 0+1, 3, 5, 10, 30, 50 and JBOD. Priced starting at $6,000, it offers redundant power supplies for added data protection, according to DNF. Enterprise 8322 3Gb/s Serial ATA-to-Ultra320 SCSI RAID series are intelligent and innovative storage subsystems for mission critical and high bandwidth applications. Purpose-built for high volume, fail-safe data storage applications, the Enterprise 8322 RAID combines high dependability with scalability and superior performance, DNF said on its web site. The Enterprise 8322 RAID integrates a 3 Gb/s Serial ATA RAID controller with a wide range of eight hot-swappable, high-performance, industry-standard 3 Gb/s SATA disk drives in a single 2U storage enclosure that is able to endure the extreme physical stresses placed on storage subsystems today. Featuring two Ultra320 SCSI host channels and eight 3Gb/s SATA disk channels, the embedded 3Gb/s SATA RAID controller enhances I/O efficiency and performance, while ensuring reliability and data availability in data-intensive storage environments, the company said. The Enterprise 8322 also features an optional RAID Cache battery backup module with two Lithium-Ion battery cells. This optional battery backup module can sustain 2GB of cached data for up to 72 hours. Equipped with two fully redundant, hot-swappable cooling fan modules and two fully redundant, hot-swappable 350 Watt power supply units, the 2U 19" rack mountable enclosure has been customized to perform in rigorous storage environments where data availability is an imperative, DNF said. At the higher end of the new DAS line is the Enterprise 12322, which supports 3 to 9TB in a single 2U chassis, along with RAID Levels 0, 1, 0+1, 3, 5, 10, 30, 50 and JBOD. With prices starting at $8,000, the Enterprise 12322 also includes redundant power supplies. The products are already shipping. Enterprise 12322 3Gb/s Serial ATA-to-Ultra320 SCSI RAID integrates a 3Gb/s Serial ATA RAID controller with a wide range of 12 hot-swappable, high-performance, industry-standard 3Gb/s SATA disk drives in a single 2U storage enclosure that is able to endure the physical stresses placed on storage subsystems, DNF said. The product has two Ultra320 SCSI host channels, twelve 3 Gb/s SATA disk channels, and an embedded 3Gb/s SATA RAID controller. The Enterprise 12322 also features an optional RAID Cache battery backup module with two Lithium-Ion battery cells. This optional battery backup module can sustain 2 GB (gigabyte) of cached data for up to 72 hours, DNF said.
