Storage At Risk Processor 11/7/2008
Experts contend that the first step in effectively addressing storage security issues is determining which parts of a storage architecture are at risk. Jame Ervin, product manager for DNF Security (www.dnfsecurity.com), says that organizations must define what information is critical, determine if they are liable in case of data breach, and, if so, examine what the consequences would be. To do this, a round of questions is in order, she says.
“For data leaving the building, how has it been secured? Is it encrypted? Will it be transported safely? Will the final resting point also be safe? For managing data in the building, don’t forget to look at the network for managing devices. . . . Is the monitoring network safe and secure, or is it on a public network? If it is, this opens up a big hole in your infrastructure. And then the last critical piece is controlling access to data in general. Who is able to see the contents of the storage system, and are there ways unauthorized users can also access it?” she says.

Storage grows by building bigger, better boxes Security Systems News 10/1/2008
The systems you deploy for customers may put cameras everywhere-perimeters, access points, hallways and high-security areas, all under the watchful eye of technology. But those images the eyes capture are only as good as the machines storing them.
The software that allows you to review and search your digital video is getting a lot more intelligent, said Jame Ervin, product manager at DNF Security, a dedicated division of storage maker DNF.

There’s a rising tendency to rely on technology to address storage-related security issues, but some experts feel that policymaking and employee awareness are similarly effective in keeping storage secure. Jame Ervin, product manager for DNF Security (www.dnfsecurity.com), says that employees are the first line of defense against data breaches.
“Many of the widely publicized security breaches involved a loss of physical control over the data—stolen laptops, missing backup tapes, and so on. In many cases, employees could have added an additional layer of protection with password-protected computers or backup tapes. Organizations should have a defined policy for access to data leaving the premises and for data inside the office and act accordingly,” Ervin says.
